DESCRIPTION

Its taken 10 years for PAS to release a protein bar but we are confident its been worth the wait.

When formulating the bars we had the following thought process

Taste - protein bars should be classed as treat, you should not be using the bars instead of chicken, meat, fish or eggs to get your daily protein needs. However a great tasting bar for travel, a late night snack or post game is very useful.

There are many bars that we could use to hammer nails in, while it may be good training for your jaw, they don't taste very nice! Thats mainly because they try and get too much protein in bar, 40 or even 50g, again we state that you should not be using them daily to meet your protein needs.

Sugar Free - lets be honest you cant make a protein bar that taste like a chocolate bar without some sugar, but lets look at the total carb content - just 20g per bar, same as a medium banana, its not huge and post training or games its not even worth worrying about. If you are dieting strictly then you shouldn't be eating protein bars full stop, eat real foods. yes we could have used more sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners to make claims of only 3g of carbs per bar but the gut issues that can follow are not what we wanted for our athletes.

We do use polydextrose to improve taste and texture without adding significant calories, here is a bit more info on it

Polydextrose is made of many dextrose (glucose) carbohydrates that randomly bond together and form a polymer. Polydextrose is produced from naturally occurring components. Polydextrose is a multi-purpose food ingredient used to replace sugar, fat and calories and to increase fibre content of foods; it also functions as a stabilizer, bulking agent and to help maintain the ideal moisture in a food.  Polydextrose has been used as a food ingredient since the 1960’s.

Nutritional Properties

Due to the complex linkage distribution in its highly branched structure, polydextrose resists digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and is partially fermented in the colon. Because polydextrose is not digested and only partially fermented in the gut, it has an energy value of only 1 kcal/ gram.

Favorable blood glucose response: Compared to glucose which has a glycemic index of 100, polydextrose has a glycemic index of 7

Prebiotic effect: It is generally believed that a prebiotic should selectively increase the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, such as lactic acid bacteria and/or bifidobacteria. Polydextrose intake is associated with increased prebiotic activity.
